Fletcher Allen Health Care, in alliance with the University of Vermont College of Medicine, is a premier academic medical center in the northeast and one of 125 in the country. Academic medical centers are medical schools and teaching hospitals that link research, medical education training and patient care.

Fletcher Allen was formed in 1995, through the integration of three health care institutions in the greater Burlington area: Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, a 515-bed teaching, tertiary care hospital affiliated with The University of Vermont, which comprises a college of medicine as well as a college of nursing and health sciences; Fanny Allen Hospital, an 100-bed Catholic institution; and University Health Center (UHC), the 10 practice groups of full-time University of Vermont College of Medicine faculty.

Fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and licensed by the Health Department of the State of Vermont, Fletcher Allen is a private, publicly supported integrated health care network that has grown beyond its three main campuses to include more than 30 patient care sites and 120 outreach services across Vermont and upstate New York.  With more than 6,000 employees, including part-time and per diem, Fletcher Allen ranks as the top employer in Burlington and the second largest employer in the state of Vermont.  Fletcher Allen?s medical staff includes 700 physicians, and the organization employs nearly 1,200 registered nurses.

Serving a population of one million, Fletcher Allen provides a full-range of tertiary-level inpatient and outpatient services, and has earned the distinction of being designated a Level 1 Trauma Center for adult and pediatric patients.  In addition to serving as the main referral center in Vermont, Fletcher Allen serves as a community hospital for the 147,000 residents of Chittenden County and provides primary care services at 11 Vermont sites.
